Energy Sources - Glossary

Hydraulic Power – Power obtained from the force of moving water.

Hydroelectric Generator – Machine that converts the kinetic energy of water in motion into electricity.

Hydroelectric Plant - Facility that generates electricity from the kinetic energy of falling or fast moving water using hydroelectric generators

Hydropower - See hydraulic power

Kinetic Energy - Energy of motion.

Nuclear Energy - Energy originated from the splitting of uranium atoms through nuclear fission.

Nuclear Fission: Process through which the atoms' nuclei are split, causing energy to be released.

Nuclear Power Plants - Generate electric power by converting the energy released by nuclear fission within a nuclear reactor.

Photoelectric Effect - Generation of an electric current in a material, upon its exposure to light.

Solar Cell - Electrical device that converts the energy of the sun light directly into electricity

Solar Energy - Energy obtained from the sun’s light and heat.

Solar Panel – A group of solar cells assembled and connected together to supply electricity. Solar panels can be used in both residential and commercial applications.

Wind Energy – The “power generated by harnessing the wind, usually by windmills” (Mayhew)

Windmill – Machine that converts the kinetic energy of air in motion into mechanical power.

Wind Farm – Several wind turbines located in the same place and used to produce electric power. Some large Wind Farms may have hundreds of wind turbines. They may be located onshore or offshore, in bodies of water.

Wind Pump – A windmill used to pumping water. Wind pumps have many practical applications, including pumping fresh water from wells and helping pump water into or out of areas of lands. They are frequently used in dry areas.

Wind Turbine – A windmill that is used to generate electric power. Wind turbines can range in size from 20 watts for residential applications to thousands kilowatts for commercial applications.
