Saving Energy at Home - Tips

If you are considering using alternative energy sources to power your home, we suggest you also try to make the use of that energy as efficiently as possible. Below are some very simple tips;:

  • Upgrade your home’s insulation, which will reduce your heating and cooling needs.
  • Reduce energy waste - Contact your power company provider and ask for a free home inspection to identify where your energy leaks are.
  • Install a programmable thermostat
  • Install gas-filled windows with low-emissivity coatings to reduce heat loss in cold climates and spectrally selective coatings to reduce heat gain in warm climates
  • Prefer devices with the Energy Star® label
  • Follow the maintenance programs suggested by manufactures of your electric devices to keep them working efficiently
  • Replace your lights in high-use areas with fluorescents.
  • Plug home electronics (TVs, DVD players, etc.) into power strips and turn them off when not in use.
  • Lower your hot water heater’s thermostat to 120°F
  • Reduce electricity use by washing only full loads of dishes and clothes.
