Solar Energy

Solar energy is the energy that comes from the Sun in the form of radiant light and heat. It is considered the most widespread form of renewable energy of the planet. Solar powered electrical generation relies on heat engines and photovoltaics.

Solar Thermal/Electric Power Plants generate electricity by concentrating solar energy to heat a fluid and produce steam that is used to power a generator.

A solar cell or photovoltaic (PV) cell is a device that converts sunlight into electric current using the photoelectric effect. Individual PV cells are grouped into solar panels and arrays of panels that can be used in a wide range of applications.

Solar technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on the way they capture, convert and distribute solar energy.

The use of the sun’s energy for the heating and cooling of living spaces is called passive solar technology. In this approach, the building design itself or some element of it takes advantage of natural energy characteristic in materials and air created by exposure to the sun. Passive systems are simple, have few moving parts, require minimal maintenance and need no mechanical systems.

On the other hand, the active solar technologies usually consist of a solar collecting device that is designed to capture the sun’s energy; it can be used to store or transfer heat energy in water or air. Unlike passive solar technologies there is usually a moving part of the system involved with active solar technologies, usually a pump type device.

Solar technologies can be used at any scale. Solar solutions can be designed to power a small sign, a swimming pool, an individual household or whole communities.
